Billings Estate National Historic Site

The Billings family settled on the shores of the Rideau River in 1812 and took an active role in shaping the community as it evolved over time and until the 1970s when they left the estate. They helped build farms and churches, ran a dairy operation, and contributed to the development of the Byward Market by providing produce for sale and building the "Farmers' Bridge".

This National Historic Site on 8 acres of green space is also home to one of Ottawa's oldest community cemeteries where well-known Ottawa pioneers, such as the Evans, Brouse and Firth families, are laid to rest.

Easter at the Estate

Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 from 10 am to 4 pm (recommended final entry by 3 pm)
Cost: $22.44 per group, plus tax. Maximum of 6 people per group; children under 2 years of age are not counted toward the maximum group size.
Advance registration is required. 

Spring has arrived at Billings Estate! Enjoy fun for the whole family with crafts, games and hands-on activities inspired by seasonal celebrations and traditions. Easter at the Estate is best suited for families with children ages 3 to 8, but younger and older siblings are welcome to join.  Special guests: The Zoo Crew. 

Registration includes admission for up to six people. Children under two are not counted toward the group total. At least one adult (18+) must be present to accompany children.

• This program will take place rain or shine. Please dress for the weather; activity stations are located both indoors and outdoors.
• Please take careful note of the date and session you register for. Your registration is valid for the indicated session only.
• Except for service animals, dogs are not permitted at this event. Thank you for helping us provide a comfortable and safe environment for all visitors.
• All reasonable attempts will be made to ensure treats are nut free. However, we cannot guarantee a nut free environment. Please let a staff member know if you have allergy concerns.

Mother's Day Tea

Sunday, May 10 with seatings at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm 
Cost: $32.99 per person (taxes included)

Share a delicious three-tier tea service with your loved ones while enjoying the beautiful grounds and gardens at Billings Estate National Historic Site. Following tea, step inside Ottawa’s oldest wood-framed house to learn more about the Billings family and explore the special exhibition, Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore. 

The tea service includes a pot of tea, finger sandwiches, a scone with butter and jam and a selection of mini desserts. All menu items are prepared or baked in-house with fresh ingredients.  

Reservations

To request a reservation, submit the online reservation form beginning Tuesday, March 24 at 10 am. Thank you for your patience while we process the high volume of requests.

By submitting the online reservation request form, you are confirming that you have read and acknowledged the information provided below.  

• We anticipate interest in this program will exceed capacity and that reservations will fill quickly. In past years we have stopped accepting reservation requests before noon on the same day the form opens. Regrettably, we can’t guarantee that everyone who submits a request will be successful in securing a reservation. 
• Reservations are filled in the order requests are received. Submitting the request form does not confirm your booking. A staff person will follow up with you by email to review your request and to provide further details regarding advance payment.
• Your reservation is not confirmed until advance payment is received. If advance payment is not received by the communicated date, the reservation will be offered to the next client on the waitlist. 
• A waitlist will be maintained once reservations are full. We encourage clients to also consider our Tea on the Lawn service. Tea on the Lawn is offered from May 15 to August 30. The online reservation request form for Tea on the Lawn opens Tuesday, April 14 at 10 am. 
• The maximum reservation size is six guests. 
• Guests are seated at tables in groups of four or six. To ensure pathways are clear, tables cannot be pushed together, and additional chairs cannot be added to a table. 
• Pairs and smaller groups will be seated at a shared table. We encourage guests to break the ice and enjoy conversation with their tablemates over a cup of tea. 
• Mother’s Day Tea is served outdoors under the cover of a tent. Please dress for the weather, including appropriate footwear for grassy terrain.  Mother’s Day Tea will run as scheduled in most weather conditions. However, in the rare event that weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances necessitate the cancellation of this event, all guests with a reservation will be contacted directly with further information.
• We will inquire about food allergies and dietary restrictions when confirming your reservation. Vegan and gluten-free alternatives are available but must be requested in advance. Please review any individual needs with every member of your group before booking. While we make reasonable efforts to accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions identified during the reservation process, we cannot guarantee a cross-contact free environment. We are unable to meet last-minute requests for accommodation at the time of service. 
• We will inquire about any accessibility needs when confirming your reservation. There are two tents for Mother’s Day Tea. The first is accessed by a paved pathway and has a stone floor. The second has a grass floor and is accessed by crossing the lawn. A passenger drop-off and pick-up zone is available in front of the lobby entrance and parking is available on site. The special exhibition, Beyond the Brim, is located on the second floor of the museum and is accessible by stairs only. A visual guide will be available for visitors who cannot access the second floor.

Tea on the Lawn

Complement your visit to Billings Estate National Historic Site with Tea on the Lawn. Enjoy tea and freshly baked goods alongside our beautiful gardens. Heritage staff are happy to highlight the unique history of the estate, making Tea on the Lawn a memorable addition to your museum experience.  

Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from May 15, 2026 to August 30, 2026 with seatings at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Reservations are required.

Reservations

Request your reservation online beginning April 14, 2026 at 10 am. Reservation requests should be made no later than 4 pm on the Sunday prior to your desired visit. If your preferred date does not appear as an option when completing the request form, reservations are full for that date (or otherwise unavailable).

Picnic on the museum grounds

Visitors are welcome to bring their own snacks and picnic on the museum grounds. To preserve the artefacts in the museum, no eating or drinking is permitted in the exhibition spaces. Outside food is also not permitted in the tent where Tea on the Lawn is served.

Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore

Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore showcases headwear alongside stories about the individuals who wore them, sharing their impact on Ottawa’s history and diverse cultural landscape. The exhibition includes hats, helmets and head coverings from the City of Ottawa Museums and Historic Sites collection, local heritage groups, cultural organizations and residents.

Artefact collections

A large portion of the Billings Estate National Historic Site artefact collection received Canadian Cultural Property designation in 1996 because of its significance as material evidence of the historic development of the nation's capital. The eclectic collection contains more than 27,000 artefacts - many of which are on exhibition at the museum - that belonged to the family and their neighbours, including furniture, household goods, personal possessions, an extensive library, tools, entomological specimens, agricultural equipment and a 1959 Cadillac. 

Exhibitions

The museum's exhibitions are designed to tell the stories of the estate and the community's evolution over more than 150 years, beginning in 1812 when the Billings family settled on the Rideau River.

Permanent exhibition - The Billings Family Story

Always at the museum is our permanent exhibition that explores the story of pioneers carving out from the wilderness a new life, the progress of relationships and families through good times and bad, the history of industry and agriculture in the area, and the community that grew over the years.

Interactive features like a touch-screen family tree, audio recordings of poetry readings and the Oath of Allegiance, as well as radio programs from days long gone by round out the experience. We've made sure there's a scavenger hunt for our young visitors, too. 

Billings Family virtual exhibition 

The Billings Family virtual exhibit, presented by the City of Ottawa Archives, gives a view of the Billings Family and their interactions with the growing city center of Ottawa and Billings Bridge Village. The histories are written from the perspective of one family’s experiences and activities, within the context of Ottawa’s development as a city.

Reminiscent of a country estate, with the convenience of a central location, Ottawa’s oldest wood-frame house is surrounded by approximately eight acres of landscaped greenspace and gardens.
